Motorcyclist Killed In Solo Accident
A motorcyclist was killed as he was thrown from his bike in front of a local high school Monday evening in Lakeside.
According to the California Highway Patrol and witnesses to the crash, the rider was speeding through the 10300 block of Ashwood Street, north of Mapleview Street in front of El Capitan High School at about 7 p.m. when the accident took place.
He was riding his 2004 Yamaha motorcycle beyond the speed limit when he ran over a dirt embankment along the side of the road that jettisoned him from the bike, sending him barreling across the pavement.
Paramedics who responded to the scene tried to resuscitate the man but were unable to do so, pronouncing him dead at the scene of the accident.
The county coroner’s office has identified the man as 47 year old Martin David Erickson from Lakeside.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and the high school had long since dismissed students for the day, so no impressionable youngsters were on scene to witness the event.
An investigation into the accident has determined that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Speed was the main cause, combined with the bike driving over such an uneven surface.
As a two wheeled vehicle, it takes little provocation to lose control of a motorcycle or be thrown off of it. There are no harnesses or seatbelts as in four wheeled vehicles, so a sudden change in direction or elevation can find the rider immediately separated from the bike.
It is always important to maintain a clear focus on the road ahead, and on whatever obstacles may be ahead. What is only a mild inconvenience in a car can become a launching pad for a motorcyclist.
