Two Los Angeles denizens were among those trapped on the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground and nearly capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.

The accident occurred just off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, when the cruise ship went too close to the islands and rammed into a boulder, tearing a huge hole in the hull. At least six people were killed and 64 were seriously injured. 15 people are still missing.

“We were crawling up a hallway, in the dark, with only the light from the life vest strobe flashing. We could hear plates and dishes crashing, people slamming against walls,” said Georgia Ananias, one of the women rescued from the ship.

Her daughter, Valeria Ananias, added, “Have you seen ‘Titanic?’ That’s exactly what it was.”

They were traveling with their family about the cruise ship when the accident occurred. The mother and daughter recounted their story of crawling through the darkened hallways to try and escape from the ship and they showed their bruises as evidence.

They wonder if the people they saw during their escape made it off alive.
