Police Pursuit Ends in Stolen Car Being Impaled on 605 Fwy in Santa Fe Springs
A man who was being pursued by the Whittier Police Department lost control of his vehicle and crashed on the northbound 605 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs injuring himself and his female passenger early Tuesday morning, Jan. 30th. The incident began in Whittier shortly before 1:30 a.m., when Whittier police received a report, from a witness who was tailing a Honda Civic, of a possible drunk driver. The witness gave officers the Honda Civics license plate. Whittier police Lt. Aaron Ruiz said a check of the license plate revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Ontario. Officers quickly spotted the stolen vehicle in the 7900 block of Gretna Avenue.
The officers observed the suspect coming toward them. The stolen vehicle then hit the patrol cruiser’s front bumper in what Lt. Ruiz called an “intentional act”. The driver then sped off and a pursuit ensued. The chase ended about 7 miles from where it began on the northbound 605 Freeway at the Telegraph Road off-ramp in Santa Fe Springs. The driver went over a divider that separates the freeway from the off-ramp while trying to exit the freeway. The suspect then collided with the guardrail which pierced the stolen vehicle. The suspect fled on foot as his female passenger was trapped inside the impaled vehicle. The suspect was apprehended a short time later and taken into custody. Santa Fe Springs Fire Department rescue crews arrived soon after to extricate the female passenger from the impaled wreckage. Whittier police officers said the suspect complained of pain. The suspect and his passenger were transported to St.
Francis Medical Center in Lynwood to receive treatment. The driver suffered abrasions sustained in the crash while his female passenger suffered serious injuries to her arm and torso. Police have not positively identified the driver yet. Ruiz said he faces charges that include assault on an officer, evading police and grand theft auto. The off-ramp was closed while crews worked to remove the vehicle and repair the damaged rail and was reopened to traffic around 5:00 a.m.
