Texas Truck Accident Kills Olympic BMX Rider Kyle Bennett
Kyle Bennett, an Olympic BMX rider was killed in a single-vehicle truck accident Sunday morning near Huston, Texas. For an unknown reason he lost control of his truck and it flipped over and crashed into a private yard. He left behind a daughter, a fiancée, loved ones and a BMX legacy. A candlelight vigil, which was followed by a commemorative ride for the first member of the first US BMX Olympic team was held Sunday night at Armadillo BMX.
Investigators believe that Bennett was rushing to meet with his fiancée. He was driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck northbound on Old Hwy 105 between Conroe and Montgomery just past Southshore Drive and the Lake Forest Falls subdivision at a high rate of speed. His fiancée had told him she had just had her vehicle broken into at her work. For an unknown reason, at about 2:16 a.m. he lost control of his truck and crashed into a private residence.
Help only arrived after homeowner Ruben Posada went outside to inspect the situation after his wife woke him up and a neighbor contacted him. His wife told him that she heard noises and the sound of large amounts of air escaping from somewhere. Then his neighbor showed up at the residence to warn him that one of his gas pipes was leaking.
When Posada rushed outside he noticed that there was something on top of the bushes on the flower bed. According to Montgomery County Police Reporter, he said “what is it, and it was a vehicle upside down.” When he learned of the Bennett’s death he felt bad for the family, because the vehicle and things it damaged can be replaced, but the life that was lost could not be replaced.
When Montgomery County Hospital District medics arrived on scene they declared Bennett had died on impact and that he had not worn his seatbelt. Old Hwy 105 was closed, with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office assisting with traffic control while Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers investigated the crash.
Lake Conroe Fire Department removed Bennett from the wreckage. Initial investigations showed that his vehicle had left the roadway, continued through a ditch, struck a culvert pipe and slammed through a wrought iron fence of the private property. Along the crash, the pickup truck rolled over, uprooted several trees, broke a gas meter the power line of an electric gate, and finally stopped on its roof on top of a flower bed.
Prior to the crash, which happened a short distance from his home, Bennett was racing fulltime on the professional circuit for USA BMX while he managed the Armadillo BMX track. Following the crash, the same track that he managed announced that they will be renaming it to the Kyle Bennett BMX Park.
