Sacramento Budget Truck Crash
Traveling from Oakland to their home in Sacramento in a large Budget moving rental truck, three men became the victims of a fatal accident Friday morning.
Darius Austin Powe-Reed and Zan Djavan Lockhart, both 20-years-old and Sacramento residents, and 30-year-old Lavell Elmore from Elk Grove were in the rental truck that was eastbound on I-80.
At about 10:25 a.m. California Highway Patrol received calls regarding a crash on the I-80 eastbound, east of the Richards Boulevard off ramp. The rental truck which the group of was in en route to Sacramento had crashed into a tree.
According to the online news publication Daily Republic, the rental truck was a 2007 GMC box truck. It had been traveling at speeds of 65 miles per hour on the slow lane when it allegedly made an unsafe lane merge to the middle lane striking a Mitsubishi Montero in the process.
CHP officer Bryan Konvalin said the initial crash caused “minor damage” it was the driver of the GMC who “allowed the vehicle to veer right.”
Skid marks were left on the road demonstrate that the driver had applied the brakes but was unable to stop the vehicle. The rental truck left the roadway collided with a tree and came to a deadly stop. All occupants died and the truck received substantial damage. The truck may have to get extensive repairs or be scrapped because the engine compartment collapsed and part of the passenger compartment collapsed.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was able to pull over onto the shoulder of the road and was not seriously injured.
Autopsies were scheduled on Monday for all three occupants of the rental truck according to Yolo County Coroner’s officials.
It was reported that the driver of the truck, Powe-Reed was the only person wearing a seatbelt. According to an investigation, there is no indication that neither alcohol nor drugs played an influence in the crash.
Authorities indicate that the slow lane of the freeway was blocked for nearly an hour. The onramp at Richards Boulevard was closed until about 12:30 p.m.
The crash is still under investigation to obtain enough information and determine what exactly happened because the crash led to various fatalities.
