Holiday Travel Continues Despite Gas Prices
Despite the high gas prices, millions of travelers still took to California’s roads over the Memorial Day weekend.
According to AAA Automobile Club Southern California, an estimated 2.6 million drivers throughout Southern California traveled over the holiday, and increase from the year before.
The average price of a gallon of gasoline is $4.29 in Southern California, which ranks as the highest average ever recorded over the Memorial Day weekend.
That average is down 8 cents from the week before, but up 10 cents from the past month, and 21 cents higher than the year before.
Part of the issue with the high cost came from recent issues with gas refineries that supply the area. Four out of the twelve refineries were shut down for maintenance, cutting into the supply made available at the pump.
Despite the recent drop in price, gas prices are still at record highs overall. Perhaps the short term drop is giving a false sense of affordability for gas, but either way motorists are hitting the roads.
On a holiday weekend, there is a greater volume of vehicles on the road. As the density of traffic increases, so too does the number of dangerous and fatal accidents.
Couple with that the added distractions of the rascally kids in the back seat, and the constant need to turn around and keep them in line, driving on a holiday weekend is shrouded in the constant threat of accidents.
