Hit and Run Accident Kills 13-Year-Old Boy and Hospitalizes Mother
A fatal hit and run accident in Upland killed a 13-year-old child and hospitalizes his mother. A man from Ontario has been charged for allegedly causing the accident.
According to authorities, the accident happened at about 11 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Campus Avenue and Arrow Highway. Witnesses said that they heard a loud noise from where the accident happened and then after investigating the source, they quickly made their way to their phones and contacted authorities.
“Like a cannon going off,” 63-year-old John Jones told PE News in reference to the sound that he and others had been a witnessed.
When authorities arrived to the intersection where the collision had occurred, they discovered that it had involved a 2004 white Dodge Ram pickup truck that was heading southbound and 1996 red Plymouth Neon that was heading westbound.
Inside the Neon were the woman and her son, according to Sgt. John Poole and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials. Further into the investigation, authorities were able to derive that “clearly, somebody ran the red light,” Poole said. “And the driver of the white vehicle fled.”
Upon crashing, the truck had violently pushed the woman’s car against a support column for the carport of a corner house. The impact was strong enough to kill her son, Joshua Roberson of Upland. Officials declared him dead at the scene. And the mother was injured.
The driver of the other vehicle, however, fled immediately after the crash. He fled on foot and left his truck behind. It had wrapped around a utility pole, where it was reported that the driver’s door badly crushed.
A search for the driver of the truck quickly ensued and police arrested 21-year-old Kyle Bahensky at his Ontario home, said Poole. Bahensky is being held for investigation of felony hit-and-run driving, Poole said. Bahensky was treated for minor injuries that he received at the accident.
Firefighters and specialized crews prepared to lift the collapsed carport to safely remove the boy’s body and have the family car towed from the scene.
Beneath the carport firefighters found a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that had been parked there prior to the crash. It belonged to 54-year-old Terry Ricketts who was asleep in a rear house when the collision happened.
