California Bill Passed to Allow Autonomous Vehicles within the Decade in Hopes of Reducing Auto Accidents
Autonomous vehicles are no longer to be an idea of the past as California recently passed a bill that would allow autonomous vehicles to travel on public state roads sometime within the decade. This step into the future will allow the auto industry to take a step closer towards auto-evolution. Legislature submitted the bill to Gov. Jerry Brown at Sacramento on Wednesday. Human error is continuously found to be the number one cause of auto accidents. Research that tracks car accidents prove that time and time again 99% of the accidents are caused due to human error. Distractions, late response or no response are some of the attributes that amount to this error. The push for autonomous vehicles insists that if a human is removed from that responsibility, there would be a lower amount of auto-releated accidents.
If the SB 1298 from Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Van Nuys, is signed by Brown, more institution would be able to improve a vehicle driving technology that would be handled by an assortment of lasers, GPS, satellites, sensors, and other intricate technologies. In return, there would be a lower amount of vehicle related fatalities.
Senate passed unanimously passed the bill after it was approved the day before that by Assembly’s 74-2 approval. SB 1298 is one of many bills that will flood Jerry Brown. It will charge the DMV that by January 2015 it will have to determine standards for cars that would operate on autopilot. Doing so will require a lot of work because such technology is new and has no mention in the state’s vehicle code.
Arizona has granted Google permission to test a few autonomous vehicles on their public roads and even issued them a special license plate with the infinity sign. Institutions developing the technology other than the search engine giant might now have the opportunity to further develop it beyond the confines of their testing sites in California.
Padilla allegedly envisions, along with other supporters, that the world could one day have computer-controlled cars that can travel people safely and promptly. With Silicon Valley technology, the dream may be closer than most think. However, there is a long road to travel and a great learning curve when it comes to the auto-evolution within the next decade or two.
