93-Year-Old Keeps Her Cool after an Auto Crash
Genevieve Couch, one month shy of her 94th birthday lost control of her vehicle before it slid down a steep embankment. She survived for eleven hours until she was rescued Friday at sundown.
Friday morning, northbound on Highway 70 in Marysville, California northeast of San Francisco, Couch slid down what police estimate to be a 50-60 foot embankment that reaches below the highway per Fox 40 in Sacramento. Her wheels began to jerk to the point that she lost complete control of her vehicle. The vehicle veered across the road, past the shoulder and down the embankment until she crashed in thick thorny bush infested area and next to a tree.
Armed with a cane she was determined to make her way out of the vehicle and onto the road, unfortunately the circumstances forbade her to do so. The driver’s side of the vehicle was barricaded by a tree, the passenger’s side was blocked by a thick bush of thorny plants and it was near impossible for her to get out of the vehicle without being bloodied.
Staying calm and collected regardless of the heat and the situation in which she was in, she rolled her windows down while her car still had electricity and fought off the thorny bush that was attempting to make an uninvited entrance into her vehicle.
A group of people hiking through the area noticed the woman in distress and contacted authorities at about sundown, nearly eleven hours since she had gotten into an accident.
While she waited for rescuers, she tended to her injuries with a makeshift bandage.
During a video interview she says “I wasn’t scared, I was just dying for a drink of water” she could not even find a piece of gum or candy in her car to alleviate her hunger and thirst.
In situations such as these Couch keeps the following in mind: “keep your head, don’t panic. Because that’s what’s going to get you, when you panic.”
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
