3 Pedestrians Hit by Car near Turner Elementary School
A vehicle crash hit three people next to an elementary school entrance Tuesday morning. They were airlifted to the same hospital, where two are in serious condition but are expected to recover. Authorities arrested the driver of the vehicle for suspicion of driving under the influence.
At about at 8:04 a.m., Antioch Police dispatch received numerous phone calls regarding a group of pedestrians being struck by an auto on Delta Fair Blvd at School Street, which is the entrance to Turner Elementary School according to the Antioch Herald.
According to Antioch police officers, a model 2012 Audi A3 Wagon hit two adults, a 32 year-old Pittsburg woman and a 47 year-old Oakley woman, and an eight year-old boy also from Oakley. The victims had been on the southeast corner of Delta Fair Blvd and School Street before they were struck by the vehicle.
Contra Costa Fire and AMR responded to the accident promptly due to the expressed concern of the witnesses, which claimed that the injuries were serious.
When authorities arrived to the scene they found the seriously injured victims and the Audi lying on its side in the driveway of 4205 Delta Fair Blvd.
Paramedics and specialists loaded the victims onto a stretcher then into an aircraft, which would transport all of them to John Muir Medical Center for treatment. Both adults were treated for various injuries inflicted on their broken bones and lacerations to their skin. According to the publication, the juvenile was knocked to the ground, but there were neither visible injuries nor complaints of pain.
Authorities identified the driver of the Audi as Michael James Ratliff, a 22 year-old Oakland resident. He was arrested at the scene for odor of alcohol. He was then taken to the Antioch Police Department facilities where his level of alcoholic intoxication would be determined by laboratory results.
Others claim that there was another passenger in Ratliff’s vehicle who may have fled the scene on foot after the collision. His identity and whereabouts are unknown.
Prior to striking the pedestrians, Ratliff struck a 2002 Toyota Camry. He had apparently lost control of his vehicle. The Camry was driven by a 47 year-old Antioch man, who was entering the school to drop off his five and nine year-old sons at school. There were zero reported injuries to any of the people in the Camry; there was only moderate cosmetic damage.
Names of the victims will be released to the public once their kin are contacted.
